As far as company names go North Herts Surfacing definitely ‘does what it says on the tin’ as they carry out road and footway repairs as well as private driveways in the North Hertfordshire area.
Founded in the early 1990s, the company now employs 40 people and runs a fleet of vans and lorries as well as an impressive selection of pavers, rollers and diggers for breaking out roads and footways ready for resurfacing and rolling the tarmac to reinstate and repair.
It is for this very task that the company made its latest purchase of the first JCB CT430-140 compaction roller in the UK which is currently being put to use on highways maintenance projects for Ringway Jacobs in Essex and EST in Hertfordshire.
And it’s safe to say the new machine is already getting the ball rolling for its new owners.
On a roll
Leigh Candler | North Herts Surfacing Director
Given the nature of the work North Herts Surfacing do, compaction rollers are an integral bit of kit, so the brand new CT430-140 joins existing JCB 260-120 rollers already in the fleet – offering a range of weight options to suit the differing tasks in hand.
“We were looking at options to purchase a heavier roller than the JCB 260-120 roller we already had and were offered the first 430-140 which was a new size roller that JCB were bringing to the market. The rollers are maintenance free and easy to use."
Powered by the latest EU Stage V diesel engine with DOC and DPF the CT430-140 weighs in at 4.5-tonnes and offers a linear load of 16.1kg/cm. The machine has a vibrating frequency of 50-60Hz and a 0.50mm amplitude, delivering a centrifugal force of 44-63kN. It is designed for ease of use, low maintenance and to offer a simple, robust compaction solution.

The whole package
While the superior quality of JCB machinery is a leading factor in North Herts Surfacing’s continual investment in its products since 2014, it is the exceptional service standards that keep the company coming back time and time again.
As Leigh Candler said: “We have had a relationship with JCB for many years and the machinery is reliable and competitively priced. We have a very good relationship with our JCB salesman and when we have been looking for machinery they have had availability to supply. We try and operate machines that are not very old so tend to trade in old for new machinery around every 3 years.
“The sales and service from Watling JCB have been good for our company, so that makes my job easier. Mark Luff has been our salesman from the beginning, and he has looked after us as a customer and is also very helpful if I have any problems that need solving. The service we receive from them is very good. Mark Luff introduced us to JCB Finance, and they are very competitive and easy to deal with too.”
It is this trusted partnership with the team at JCB which helps enable North Herts Surfacing to maintain its strong customer base and supports them to keep winning local contracts which is crucial to the business. As Leigh Candler concludes: “We have been around for many years on many different contracts for many different clients so hopefully we are doing something right.”
Under the surface
Despite the nature of their work, North Herts Surfacing’s success goes below surface level and their ongoing partnership with JCB, Watling JCB and JCB Finance run deep.
