Workplace safety tips when working with access platforms
Access platforms allow construction sites to lift workers so they can reach high areas easily and efficiently. They’re incredibly convenient machines as they’re so easy to manoeuvre, meaning they can be used across a variety of different environments and heights.
And as long as they’re well maintained and used correctly, access platforms are extremely safe tools to use. However, working at height will always be an inherently dangerous part of construction and a lack of care when using access equipment can result in serious accidents and injuries.
To combat this, there are guidelines in the UK for using access equipment such as the Work at Height Regulations (2005), Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (1998) and the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER), that apply to mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs). These were created to support businesses in preventing potentially fatal accidents and injuries.

Check access equipment prior to use
Before using your access platform, it is vital to conduct a visual inspection to ensure the machine is in full working order. These checks should be carried out every time a new operator uses the machine to ensure that any problems can be corrected before starting work. An inspection should include:
- Checking relevant documentation is on the machine.
- Checking wheels and tyres.
- Checking oil and fuel levels.
- Checking hydraulic fluid levels and looking for leaks.
- Looking for any damage, such as dents, weld or metal cracks.
- Checking decals and signage are clean and legible.
- Ensuring each part of the machine is functioning properly.
- Inspecting accessories and attachments.
- Overhead and ground-level function checks.
- Always refer to manufacturers operators manual.
How to properly maintain your access platform
Regular maintenance of your machine involves taking steps to ensure it is fully functional, in good working order and safe to operate, including doing any repairs required. Maintenance is just as important as daily checks because it requires a more thorough inspection that corrects any damage or wear and tear that could result in an accident or injury. As a result, maintaining your access platform is an essential part of using an access platform safely.
According to UK law, a MEWP must have a LOLER certificate, also known as a Thorough Examination Report. Without one, your machine is not compliant, meaning your company is liable should any accidents occur. You can find out more about getting a LOLER certificate for your access platform here.
Further considerations
Consideration should also be given to the surroundings when elevating and driving the equipment. It is always good practice to survey the area and walk the route before starting work. Major hazards can include uneven ground, overhead objects and obstacles, and moving vehicles and pedestrians.
If you’re planning to operate your Electric Scissor Lift outside, you also need to be aware of the weather conditions you’re working in. For more detailed information on the weather conditions your machine is best suited to, check the manufacturers guidelines.
Operator training and certification
Before employees use any mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs), such as an access platform, they need to be properly qualified to do so according to UK law. The most popular training body in the UK for MEWPs is IPAF.
Any employee who has successfully completed the course from IPAF should have a PAL Card. This card indicates that they know how to operate an access platform in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and industry best practice. On the course, they will also learn how to conduct pre-operational inspections, carry out safe operating procedures, and implement emergency procedures.
Of course, safety guidelines vary by country, so if you are operating outside the UK you will need to find out what safety guidelines are in place in that country.
Check the safe working load of your machine
The safe working load (SWL) of a MEWP refers to the maximum load that the MEWP basket can safely carry. A MEWP’s safe working load includes the combined weight of the operator, tools, equipment, materials, and any material handling devices contained in the basket.
The safe working load of your machine, including the maximum number of people allowed on the platform, should be clearly displayed. However, you can also check it in the manufacturer’s guidelines. Before starting any work, you should check what the safe working load of your machine is so you can ensure you don’t exceed it.
